Somatic Experiencing

“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” — Viktor Frankl

One of the most important life skills a person can learn is how to befriend and listen to their body. As we start to become familiar with all of the knowledge the body has to share it becomes easier to recognize signs of stress so that we can consciously return to calm. When a person is able to do this they become empowered to cope with life’s challenges on their terms. Somatic Experiencing is an evidenced based paradigm that focuses on just that. Children and parents who work with me learn how to pay attention to their body and their nervous system with friendly curiosity so that they can learn how to access calm when they need it most.

I am a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP) which required completing 187 hours of study through the Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute. I have also studied Mindfulness and have completed training to teach mindfulness to students through the Mindful Schools program.

Other approaches I incorporate in addition to Somatic Experiencing and Mindfulness include Polyvagal Theory, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Internal Family Systems and the Circle of Security attachment model. This powerful combination allows me to help children master the art of coping with difficult emotions. It also provides a framework for supporting adults as they learn how to parent with intention even when they are frustrated, exhausted, or stressed.

If these are the skills you are looking for to increase joy in your family, let’s talk more.
